We strive to be an inclusive and welcoming Christian community.

Our Baptism calls us to continue in common prayer and worship, to spread the Good News of God in Jesus Christ, to seek and serve Christ in others, and to strive for justice and peace in the world. This puts us on a journey of faith, not claiming to have all the answers but coming together to explore the questions. Our Episcopal tradition means that there is plenty of room for questions and exploration. If you are on a journey of faith, or would like to begin one, we invite you to travel with us. We do not promise you easy answers. We promise you a supportive community of fellow travelers.

Where God and People Meet

Who We Are

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is one of 50 parishes in the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island.  Our diocese is a member of the Episcopal Church, USA which includes approximately 2 million members of 7,000 churches throughout all 50 states as well as sixteen countries. Since 1816 St. Paul’s has been a vibrant center of worship and serv ice in the city of Pawtucket.  Samuel Slater, the “Father of American Manufacturers” was the first Senior Warden; and the tower bell, which has now called people to prayer for over 200 years, was cast by silversmith and American Revolution patriot, Paul Revere.

200 Years Later

St. Paul’s continues to be a place where people gather to worship God “in the beauty of holiness” and the holiness of beauty.  The current church building, constructed in 1901, is patterned after Gothic churches of 15th century England.  With its ornate interior wood carvings and beautiful stained-glass windows it has recently been placed on the National Register of Historical Places.

A Welcoming Place

People from the broader community find a welcoming place at St. Paul’s as it houses an educational center for the Pawtucket School Department, welcomes the congregation of Joy Church to worship in our Trinity Chapel, provides rehearsal space in the Great Hall for the Harmony Heritage Women’s Chorus, and supports a local theater group in their mission to develop and train young actors.  With our vast space for worship, social events and meetings, St. Paul’s always opens its doors to various community groups in need of a safe and welcoming environment for meetings, gatherings, and events throughout the year.

There’s a Place for You Here!

Worship

Our Sunday morning worship schedule consists of an early service at 8 a.m. and takes place in the chapel.  This quiet, intimate service of Rite II includes Holy Communion, has no music, and runs about 45 minutes. Our later service, which takes place in the church, is at 10 a.m. and serves as our principal service of Holy Communion with choir, organ, and a sung liturgy.

Our Mission

Prayerfully going forth to love, to care, to work, to share, in Christ’s name.

That is the sum total of our mission statement – few words with a strong emphasis on service. Gathering as community in worship and prayer is absolutely necessary to energize us for the going forth. Every Sunday we hear and experience the Word of God in song, prayer, scripture, and preaching. That Word dwells in us: in our questions, our certainties, our doubts, our fears, and our joys. And it is that Word that accompanies us as we leave and move out into the world ready to share our abundance with all we meet on the way. God’s mission is our mission: to bring all people to the knowledge and love of God through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Service to the Community

St. Paul’s has a long history of serving the  needs of the surrounding community.  Through our support of the House of Hope, we donate food, toiletry articles, and housing items to support the homeless and those moving off the streets into affordable housing.  In these efforts, St. Paul’s strives to reach out to the stranger and offer a helping hand to those in need.

Music

The rich diversity of music in the Episcopal Church gives our faith community a foundation of music from the 16th century to the styles and compositions of today, along with music of the Hispanic and African-American traditions.  If you are a singer or play a musical instrument, we welcome your song!
